Thalapathy Vijay‘s Mersal took a massive opening on day one (Wednesday, October 18) at the Chennai as well as the pan-India box office. The film beat the likes of Ajith’s Vivegam and Rajinikanth’s Kabali very easily on the first day. However, looks like it hasn’t been able to grow in the next two days at the Chennai box office, as we had expected it to. The film managed to collect a gross collection of Rs 4.17 crore in the Chennai region in the first three days. This is slightly lesser than what Vivegam managed to earn at the Chennai BO (Rs 4.28 crore). And with that, Mersal has failed to beat Vivegam, at least for now. As industry tracker and trade analyst – Ramesh Bala revealed on Twitter, “2017 Top 2 #Chennai Box Office (3 Days): Gross: #Vivegam – Rs 4.28 crore. #Mersal – Rs 4.17 crore.”
Considering that first three days for Mersal were all weekdays, we can understand the low collections. However with an extended weekend, we are sure the film will grow and rake in a huge amount. It might just shatter Vivegam and Kabali‘s all time records too. The detailed break down of Mersal‘s collections for the first three days was revealed by Ramesh Bala, when he tweeted, “#Mersal at #Chennai City Box office 3-Days: Oct 18 – Rs 1.52 crore, Oct 19 – Rs 1.47 crore, Oct 20 – Rs 1.18 crore. Total Gross – Rs 4.17 crore.” (ALSO READ – 5 things Thalapathy Vijay’s Mersal did better than Thala Ajith’s Vivegam)
In the meantime, the film is killing it at the pan-India market. After raking in Rs 31.50 crore at the box office on day one, the film is all set to register another humongous number on day two. The film has got fantastic reviews and received a phenomenal word of mouth publicity. With that, we expect Mersal to continue its record breaking run.
